A visit to the Lolgorian area of Trans Mara sub-county in Narok County would lead one to expect signs of wealth when passing through the villages and trading centres on the way to Kilimapesa Gold Mine fields.

If holding large gold deposits were the measure of wealth, residents would be driving flashy cars, living in grand homes, and oozing affluence.

However, the gold deposits in the area are more of a curse than a blessing to the residents.

Recently, five artisanal miners were buried alive after a collapse at a mining shaft.

The disaster struck unexpectedly when dozens of artisanal miners had entered the underground shafts to excavate gold.

A critical section of the tunnel wall suddenly caved in, trapping several workers under tonnes of heavy debris.

The government has since shut down four mining sites in the Lolgorian area to prevent further loss of life.

However, a spot check by the Saturday Standard has revealed that most residents of Lolgorian survive from hand to mouth despite years of extracting the precious mineral from stones and mud.

They sell the mud and stones after extracting some gold to a foreign company and hundreds of brokers, some from as far as central African countries.

The miners use mercury to separate the gold, which exposes them to health risks.

After extracting the quantities they manage, the brokers buy the mud from them for further extraction.

Mercury does about 20 per cent of the work,” says Peter Katam, a member of a local organisation that helps small-scale miners find safer ways of working.

One of the brokers involved in the trade told the Saturday Standard that they help locals earn a living and improve their lives.

“Our money continues to assist the people to pay for school fees, buy food and earn a living. They use the earnings to buy drugs and buy anti-venom medicine, as this area is known for poisonous snakes,” said the broker who spoke on condition of anonymity.

 He denied reports that brokers exploit locals by offering them low prices for processed gold before other players entered the scene recently.

 “We offered acceptable prices. You don’t expect to get good money when you have processed it by less than 20 per cent,” he said.

 However, gold mining in the region is experiencing a dangerous shift.

Children who have been idle during school closures have turned to working in the gold mines.

“Parents and relatives are to blame because they send their children to do odd jobs, including mining, to bring money home,” said Julius Kipeno, a resident of Lolgorian.

Johnston Ouko, a labourer at the pits, said that when schools close, children become a common sight in the area.

“When it rains, the soil becomes loose, which is dangerous. Although rules have been introduced barring children from mining areas, they still find their way into them,” he laments.

When children enter the mines, he explains, they scoop mud and attempt to extract a little gold, and with mercury readily available, they manage to find something to sell.

“We are forced to mobilise people, including area elders and miners, to chase them away,” says Ouko, who migrated to Lolgorian from Awasi in Nyando.

Because of this activity, the township, which is growing faster than Kilgoris, the commercial and administrative centre of Transmara sub-county, hosts people from other parts of the country and some from neighbouring nations.

Mining has also caused land prices to spike. An acre, depending on its proximity to the mining sites, now sells for between Sh3 million and Sh5 million.

Philip Nkadenya, a member of the Lolgorian Small Gold Miners Association, says that members are working with law enforcement agencies to prevent children from accessing the mining fields, adding that most young people involved in gold search are not from the locality.

John Lekishan, an official from an NGO involved in raising awareness about the dangers of gold mining, said that the process of separating gold from stones and mud is arduous and dangerous, making it unsafe for children to be near the mines.

Apart from providing protective gear, the organisation supplies miners with generators for pumping water out of the mining fields, especially during the rainy season, ball mills for crushing stones into powder, pans for smelting, and training on how to safely operate the machinery.

“We train them to do their work safely. We used to rely on mercury, but since the global move to phase out the poisonous metal is underway, we are devising ways for them to extract, process, and obtain the final product without exposing themselves to danger,” says Lekishan.

The Ministry of Mining, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, is working with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to help miners shift away from mercury dependence by providing technology for safe gold extraction.

Following a recent accident, Trans Mara South Deputy County Commissioner Stephen Emojong confirmed that the mines had been shut down.

He announced that the mine would remain closed until further notice as investigations are conducted to determine the cause of the incident and to assess safety standards at the site.

“The pit will be closed with immediate effect until we complete investigations. We must ensure that such tragedies do not happen again,” Emojong stated.

Narok County Disaster Management Officer Shadrack echoed these remarks, confirming that five people died in the incident while four others sustained injuries.

He reported that the injured were rushed to Lolgorian Level 4 Hospital for treatment and were later discharged.

Some residents who volunteered to enter the pit during the operation said they only managed to find clothes and blood-stained sacks, but no bodies.

“We went deep inside hoping to find someone alive or even the bodies, but all we found were clothes and sacks with blood. It was painful,” said one of the residents.

Security has since been increased around the mine as police and county officials restrict access.

Meanwhile, the bodies of the five deceased miners have been moved to the Kehancha Referral Hospital mortuary, where they await post-mortem examinations before being released to their families for burial.

County officials have advised miners in the region to adhere to safety guidelines and to cease operations in unlicensed and unsafe pits.

1. Complete the application form

Complete the Application for a Botswana Driving Licence/Permit form. The form can be obtained from the Enquiries Desk at a DRTS office or downloaded from the government website.

2. Complete the eye examination

Applicants must undergo an eye screening.

If the screening identifies an eyesight problem, the Registration and Licensing Officer may refer the applicant to an external eye specialist for further examination.

The application can proceed once the specialist provides recommendations confirming that the applicant can continue with the process.

3. Submit your documents

Kirinyaga County has emerged as the best-performing county in Kenya, according to a new survey. 

The Thematic Governors Performance Index 2022-2026 by research firm Politrack Africa rates all 47 counties on agriculture, health, water management and public satisfaction. Kirinyaga posted a composite score of 61.5 per cent, the highest in the country, under Governor Anne Waiguru.

Kisii County under Governor Simba Arati followed with 58.5 per cent.

Narok and Machakos counties tied for third at 57.3 per cent, led by governors Patrick Ole Ntutu and Wavinya Ndeti.

Politrack Africa surveyed between July 13 and 17 through computer-assisted telephone interviews, sampling 3,000 respondents across all counties.

The poll carries a margin of error of plus or minus 4 per cent at a 95 per cent confidence level.

Researchers scored counties on a scale of one to 10 across devolved functions before converting responses to percentages. The composite score combines agriculture, health, water and public satisfaction ratings divided by four.

“The index measures citizens’ perceptions of the performance of governors based on service delivery and implementation of devolved functions as provided for under the constitution,” said Politrack Africa.

Waiguru recorded the highest public satisfaction score in the survey at 68 per cent. The report credits the Sagana Agro-Industrial Park, a 500-million-shilling project processing tomatoes, mangoes and dairy that has created 2,000 jobs, alongside an e-voucher system reaching 10,000 farmers with seeds and fertiliser.

The report also cites upgrades at Kianyaga and Kimbimbi Level Four hospitals and the completion of the Kimbimbi Water Project, which now supplies clean water to 8,000 households in Mwea East and Kirinyaga Central.

The bottom of the top 20 list included Busia County under Governor Paul Otuoma at 47.8 per cent, Kwale under Governor Fatuma Achani at 48 per cent and Nyandarua under Governor Moses Badilisha at 48.3 per cent.

The survey found a gender gap in ratings, with women rating health, water and public satisfaction higher than men by four percentage points across each category. Men rated agriculture two points higher than women.

Urban residents rated services higher than rural residents across all three sectors, with the widest gap recorded in water access at eight percentage points.

The report recommends that counties close the urban-rural service gap, adopt gender responsive budgeting and scale up successful pilots such as Kirinyaga’s e-voucher system.

At least 2,500 officers from Nairobi County inspectorate will join Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit once it is unveiled, governor Johnson Sakaja has announced.

The directive to form the Unit composed of police officers drawn from the National Police Service and Nairobi County was issued in February by President Ruto during the signing of Cooperation Agreement between the County and National government.

As part of the ongoing preparation, it is stated the officers who will join the unit will first undergo specialised training before deployed.

“We will train 2,500 police officers from the county and the National Police Service. They will undergo vigorous training to address the security challenges of the city,” governor Sakaja announced during a church service at St. Austin’s Church in Westlands on Sunday

He added that, “We need more security patrols in Nairobi than traffic patrols because this is a city of seven million people with unique security needs,”

Already Kamukunji police station has already been proposed as the headquarters of the Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit that is currently being formed to tackle crime in Nairobi.

At the same time Sakaja challenged security agencies to take decisive action against individuals accused of disrupting political meetings, saying many of the perpetrators had already been identified.

He said the continued use of goons to intimidate political opponents had heightened political tensions and posed a serious threat to peace and stability ahead of the elections.

On July 17, 2026 a team from the Ministry of Interior on Friday visited the Kamukunji police station for a fact finding mission ahead of some scheduled construction of some operation units within the station to accommodate more workforce.

The visit was led by Secretary for Internal Security, Thomas Sakah alongside a technical team comprising representatives from the Kenya Defence Forces, Kenya Police Service.

Other officials were from the Administration Police Service, Nairobi City County Government and the State Department for Housing and Urban Development on a site assessment to determine its suitability.

“Kamukunji is one of Nairobi’s clearest representations of the city’s role as Kenya’s commercial and financial centre but operating within a complex urban security environment,” the Ministry of Interior said in a statement

Earlier, the headquarters had been proposed to be set up at City Cabanas alongside control rooms of smart cameras but according to Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja, he proposed Kakunji since it is a central point.

“Kamukunji is strategically located in one of the city’s most densely populated areas on the eastern side of Nairobi, commonly referred to as Eastlands. Its central location makes it an ideal base for the Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit,” Sakaja stated

Adding, “Following benchmarking visits to New York and London, we have already made significant progress toward establishing the unit. A new modern station is scheduled for construction,”

The prime suspect in the murder of three men in Kiambu County has been transferred to Kiambu Police Station as detectives seek more time to conclude investigations.

Police said the suspect was handed over to officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Kiambu East after his arrest by security agencies in Mathira East Sub-county, Nyeri County.

He was tracked down at Githima B Village in Giakaibei Sublocation, Gathehu Location, following an intensive manhunt linked to the killings of Kennedy Mambo, John Kamau and Cyrus Muchiri.

The three victims were found dead at Muthithi Estate in Kiambu Town on July 21, 2026.

After being formally handed over at Karatina Police Station, detectives escorted the suspect to Kiambu, where he was booked into police cells pending his arraignment before the Kiambu Law Courts.

Investigators are expected to seek custodial orders to allow more time to complete investigations into the triple murder.

Police said preliminary investigations indicate the suspect had allegedly attacked and killed the three men at a construction site after he was dismissed from his job as caretaker over allegations of theft. The property belongs to a woman who is currently out of the country.

Meanwhile, detectives in Nyandarua County have launched investigations into the murder of 80-year-old Paul Kibuthu Kanyiria, who was found dead inside his house in Mairoinya area, Nyandarua North Sub-county.

The elderly man’s relatives became concerned after he had not been seen for some time, prompting his son to ask a nephew to check on him.

The nephew, accompanied by neighbors, found Kanyiria lying face down beside a bed inside his two-bedroom timber house with severe head injuries.

Police said the victim had wounds on the back of the head believed to have been inflicted using a sharp object, while marks on the neck suggested he may have been strangled.

Crime scene investigators recovered a blood-stained metal rod and a blood-stained sisal string believed to be possible murder weapons. The body was moved to Nyahururu County Referral Hospital Mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.

In Nairobi’s Kayole area, a community construction project turned tragic after a dispute between two groups of youths left 23-year-old Edwin Musanga dead.

According to police, Musanga had joined members of the East-Side Youth Group to build a security wall for a community goat-rearing project in Bamao, Kirima area.

Trouble began when one of the laborers accidentally fell onto the freshly built wall, causing part of the structure to collapse.

The incident sparked an argument that escalated after the laborer fled, attracting another group of youths from Chokaa and triggering a violent confrontation.

Musanga sustained serious injuries during the clash and was rushed to Emmanuel Hospital before being referred to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, where he later died.

Police contained the violence and have launched investigations. No arrests had been made by the time of filing the report.

Elsewhere in Homa Bay County, 58-year-old Joseph Ochieng Mogo was hacked to death while another man suffered critical injuries in an attack believed to be linked to a family dispute in Ndhiwa Sub-county.

Police found Mogo’s body lying in a pool of blood at Kochiri/Ngo’pe Village with multiple deep cuts to the head and face, while one of his fingers had been severed.

His wife told investigators that the deceased had previously received threats from one of their sons over an undisclosed family dispute.

The murder weapon was not recovered, and detectives continue to investigate the killing while pursuing those responsible. No arrests had been announced.

 

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has approved corruption-related charges against nine individuals and three companies linked to procurement undertaken by the County Government of Nakuru, following investigations by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

In a press statement, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions said it received an inquiry file from the EACC concerning allegations of corruption, conflict of interest, procurement irregularities, money laundering and acquisition of proceeds of crime involving county officials and private companies.

According to the statement, those facing prosecution are county employees Lorna Karamuta Mubichi, Daniel Wainaina, Kennedy Mungai, Timothy Kiogora Muriithi, Josphat Kimemia, Peter Gitau Thabanja and Solomon Sirma, as well as Kenneth Muriithi Ndubi and Brian Mwenda Ndubi.

The companies implicated in the case are Denken Building and Construction Limited, Murinchamba Investment Limited and Windcom Solutions Limited.

The DPP said an independent and thorough review of the inquiry file established that there was sufficient evidence to charge the suspects with several offences.

“The DPP established that there is sufficient evidence to charge the suspects for offences including conflict of interest, money laundering, acquisition of proceeds of crime, willful failure to comply with procurement law, and engaging in corrupt and fraudulent practices in procurement proceedings,” the statement said.

DPP also directed that all the accused persons and the implicated companies be charged before a court of competent jurisdiction.

The approval of the charges marks the latest anti-corruption action targeting procurement processes in county governments, an area that has repeatedly attracted scrutiny from oversight agencies due to allegations of inflated contracts, conflicts of interest and diversion of public resources.

Under Kenya’s Constitution, the DPP has the independent mandate to institute and undertake criminal proceedings against any person before any court, except a court martial, where sufficient evidence exists.

The office works closely with investigative agencies such as the EACC, which investigates economic crimes and corruption before forwarding completed files for prosecutorial review.

Public procurement remains one of the sectors most vulnerable to  corruption because it involves large amounts of public funds used to purchase goods, services and undertake development projects.

The government has in recent years intensified efforts to enforce procurement laws and strengthen accountability in both national and county governments.

The EACC has consistently maintained that abuse of procurement systems undermines service delivery and denies citizens the benefits of public investment. Consequently, investigations into procurement-related offences have become a major focus of the commission’s anti-graft campaign.
